TESTING: embedding a Spreadsheet and Chart into my Blog Post

We used Google Sheets to quickly grab data and use the basic spreadsheet tools to manage the data and create a chart. One can now begin to analyze the trends in the test scores.

If one returns to the actual Google Sheet and does some updating, it will instantly appear updated in this blog post, also. This is DYNAMIC, not static. Cool.

New Ed Tech Standards and Requirements

Take a few minutes to scan through the technology standards and requirements addressed in in the NETS*S, NETS*T, new Oregon Diploma and new Oregon Edu. Technology Standards (OETS).

How might you explain the big picture to a fellow educator or parent what these standards are trying to accomplish?
Describe some strategies you could implement at your grade level(s) and/or subject matter in order to accomplish this huge task. Please relate your strategies/activites to specific ed tech Standards.

The initial part of this assignment involved each student creating a new Post in their personal Ed Tech blog regarding Web2.0 and its potential impact in education.

The latter part of this assignment is requesting you copy the responses you posted in your blog and paste them as a Comment into our class (or instructors) Ed Tech 520 Course Blog.

There are several reasons for this request.

Your personal blog travels with you forever and you totally control it. You may eventually desire to use it as your eFolio when applying for teaching positions.
By copying and pasting the text from you blog post as a Comment into this blog, your instructor (as well as all students) can view every students response in one place.
Additionally, all students may view all the Comments in one place, and reflect or post responses within this one thread. In many ways this is more powerful than typical Discussion Boards.

1- Illustrations: Share and Publish as a web page

2- Get a link to the published data -> select HTML to embed in a page

3- Experiment with the frame width and height (as desired)

The Default: width =500 may be too narrow. Try 800 or 900.
The Default: height=300 may be to short. Try 700 or 800.

NOTE 1: You don't have to publish All Sheets. In the above illustration, one could select the drop-down menu that says All-Sheets and select just the sheet they desire.

NOTE 2: If embedding in a Blog Post -> select the EditHTML tab to paste your embedded coding.

NOTE 3: one can edit the height="300" to a larger number to prevent vertical scrolling.

Demonstration of Google Forms (one of the Google Docs options).
Type in some questions (T/F, Mult Choice, Short answer, Open ended, etc.)
Post Form in a Blog or web site or email to participants.

Students enter and submit their responses.
Google Sheets/Forms instantly updates to master data sheet, including tons of statistical analysis. One can post the results, also.

I invited Bryce Jenkinson, a first-year teacher at Cascade Locks Middle School, to present to our class from Portland, Oregon. We used Skype for our Audio connection and TeamViewer.com so we could view his personal computer remotely from here in class. Bryce demonstrated how he is integrating technology into his middle school curriculum. I think you will be more than amazed. View his creative substitute plan! He posted it using Tokbox.com.

Here is his class website and blog (for posting student presentations using Google Presentation and Screentoaster.com). All free, fully web-based solutions.

Course Requirements

Attendance and Participation

Regular, timely attendance and participation are critical. Should you need to miss a class time, contact the instructor as soon as possible. It is difficult to make up the collaborative interaction that takes place.
Communication/Collaboration

Check your gmail account frequently (at least daily), and any other forms of communication that are designated by your instructor.

Assignments

Each class will have a set of required task(s) to complete, generally due by the following meeting.

Submissions will vary, including email, blog, website, or other technologies discussed in class.

The final project will be an opportunity for the students to integrate technology into their instructional planning.

Grading Policy

In order to receive a passing mark for the course, students must:

Attend and actively participate in all required classes.

Demonstrate an increase in their ability to use technology in the classroom.

Complete and receive at least a Meets or Exceeds Expectations on all required tasks.

Readings:

No required text. Reading and research assigned as appropriate.
